The Romanian Air Force shot down a drone in national airspace for the first time on Friday morning, as President Nicusor Dan and the Ministry of Defence in Bucharest announced.

Update of 26.07.2026: Romania has shot down a drone over its territory for the second day in a row. This escalates the situation on NATO's eastern flank, after the first shoot-down of a drone by the Romanian Air Force had been reported just the day before.

On Friday at around 11:00 a.m., an F-16 fighter jet of the Romanian Air Force took off and destroyed the drone with a missile over unpopulated terrain near the village of Padina in Buzau County, President Dan explained. The target had been located roughly 100 kilometres from the capital Bucharest. According to the Ministry of Defence, the object was hit a few minutes after entering the airspace. No one was injured according to current information.
