Rome Pride Excludes Jewish LGBTQ+ Group Over Gaza War Stance

The organizers specifically criticized Keshet Italia for not clearly distancing itself from Israel's military actions in the Gaza Strip. They emphasized, however, that they distinguish between the Israeli government and the Jewish community, including Jewish LGBTIQ people, and that no one is held responsible for alleged war crimes of the Israeli government.

A Politically Motivated Exclusion

Keshet Italia responded by calling the move a "politically motivated exclusion." The group stated it feels close to the Palestinian people but asked for caution with language regarding the war, refusing to join a specific call to condemn genocide.

"Rome Pride hat die Maske fallen lassen," the organization said in a statement, which translates to "Rome Pride has dropped its mask."

The European Jewish Congress (EJC) also condemned the decision. The EJC stated that participation in an event should not depend on whether Jewish organizations support certain political narratives.

International Condemnation

Keshet Italia argued that no one should be subjected to an "ideological test" to be part of a movement founded on inclusion and equality. The group's exclusion has raised questions about the increasing politicization of Pride events globally.

The dispute highlights a growing tension within progressive movements over how to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. For some activists, a firm stance against the Israeli government's actions is a non-negotiable part of intersectional justice. For others, singling out a Jewish organization over its political views sets a dangerous precedent.

A Broader Movement Debate

The Rome Pride organizers maintain that their platform is clear and that participation with a float is a form of endorsement. They have not indicated any willingness to reverse their decision.

Keshet Italia has stated it still plans to have its members attend the parade as individuals, but the loss of its official float represents a significant symbolic blow. The group has been a visible part of the Italian LGBTQ+ landscape, working to bridge Jewish and queer identities.

The controversy is likely to continue dominating the conversation in the lead-up to the June 20 event, with both sides holding firm to their stated principles.
