Cristiano Ronaldo paid an emotional tribute to former national team player Diogo Jota, who died in an accident in July 2025, after Portugal's 2-1 (0-0) victory over Croatia in the World Cup Round of 16.
Following the dramatic match in Toronto, which Portugal won 2-1 (0-0) against Croatia to secure their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Southern European side's players gathered at the center circle. Together, they commemorated Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in July 2025. The former Portuguese international lost his life on July 3, 2025, at the age of 28, on the A-52 near Cernadilla during a drive from Porto to Santander, Spain, in a car crash. His brother André, born in 2000 and also a footballer, also died in the accident.
Cristiano Ronaldo, whom reports describe as being close to tears, put on a jersey with the number 21 – Jota's squad number – after the final whistle and held it up in the middle of his team. He then raised his finger toward the sky. „Er ist dort oben und leuchtet auf uns herab", Ronaldo recalled about his late teammate. Portugal had therefore felt a special motivation to win the match.
