Rubio Announces Trump's Participation in NATO Summit in Ankara and Calls for Reforms

According to Rubio, Trump intends to present the American arguments for a change of course within the alliance at the summit in Ankara and to once again call on allies to significantly increase their defense spending. This demand has been directed by Washington – particularly vociferously since Trump took office in January 2025 – at the European NATO states to take more responsibility for the defense of the alliance's territory. The US government describes this process as "burden shifting."

Greenland and Troop Presence in Europe

Against the backdrop of the long-simmering controversy over Greenland, Rubio also commented on the President's territorial ambitions. He said Greenland is "for now" part of Denmark. Discussions about using Greenland for collective defense are ongoing and "on the right track" – without him providing details. Rubio had also clarified in previous statements that the US is not questioning its membership in NATO.

At the same time, the US has announced a reduction in its troop presence in Europe. This step is related to the debate, ongoing for months, about a fairer burden-sharing within the alliance.
