U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio began a four-day visit to India on Saturday, aiming to stabilize relations strained by tariffs and to brief New Delhi on President Donald Trump’s high-stakes meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this month.
Rubio arrived in Kolkata early Saturday, starting a multi-city tour that will also take him to Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi. His first official trip to India as Washington’s top diplomat comes as both sides look to reset a partnership that has soured over Trump’s tariff policies, which raised duties on several Indian exports.
"There’s a lot to work on with India, they’re a great ally and partner. We do a lot of good work with them so this is an important trip," Rubio said ahead of his departure.
