Odessa, 14 July 2026

According to Ukrainian sources, Russia has again attacked freighters off the port city of Odessa, killing the captain of one of the ships.

In the attack off the Black Sea coast near Odessa, the captain of one of the affected ships was killed, as the military governor of the Odessa region, Oleh Kiper, announced via the messaging service Telegram. He wrote verbatim: „Infolge der Attacke kam der Kapitän eines der Schiffe ums Leben“. Details regarding the identity of the deceased, the ship's flag, and the exact time of the attack were not initially made public.

Background of the attacks in the Black Sea

The attack comes against the backdrop of a months-long series of drone strikes on civilian ships in the Sea of Azov, a marginal sea of the Black Sea. According to Ukrainian information, more than 100 ships have already been attacked in recent days, including tankers and freighters sailing under various flags.
