Berlin, 15 July 2026
During the night of 15 July 2026, Ukrainian drone forces claimed to have attacked Russian tankers in the Black Sea, while Russian forces simultaneously bombed the city of Sumy as well as ports in the Odessa and Mykolaiv regions with guided bombs.
According to the head of Ukraine's drone forces, Robert Browdi, "the first 20 tankers were taken out on the night of 15 July" in the Black Sea. Browdi wrote on his Telegram channel that "the first round of the naval war has been completed" in the Sea of Azov. "Now it is about bringing down at least as many Russian tankers in the Black Sea," he added. The claims could initially not be independently verified.
According to Browdi's account, the strikes hit "17 oil tankers, two gas tankers, and one tugboat." "According to Browdi, a total of 116 ships were attacked in the Sea of Azov." Ukraine, which has been defending itself for four years against the Russian-led invasion, is thus expanding its operations to a new maritime area. The Sea of Azov is a marginal sea of the Black Sea, connected to it by the Kerch Strait.
