A court in Moscow has sentenced Russian opposition politician Maxim Kruglov to seven years in a penal colony on charges of disseminating falsehoods about the army.

Background: The charges

The verdict was handed down on Wednesday in Moscow and was reported consistently by several Russian media outlets. Kruglov had already been arrested in early October 2025. According to the reports, the prosecution relied on two social media posts made by the politician in 2022.

In one of the two posts, according to his defense team, Kruglov cited United Nations figures and gave a number of civilians killed in Ukraine. The other concerned Bucha, the Ukrainian small town that became a symbol of Russian war crimes after its liberation.
