The 44-year-old Russian artist Semyon Skrepetsky was killed by several gunshots on Monday evening in the Polish town of Biała Podlaska near the border with Belarus.
According to police, the 44-year-old Semyon Skrepetsky was hit by several shots in Biała Podlaska, roughly 35 kilometers from the Belarusian border. A spokesperson for the Lublin Voivodeship confirmed the incident to the Polish news agency PAP. The artist had been living in exile in Poland since 2021.
Skrepetsky was internationally known above all for satirical drawings and depictions in which he caricatured Vladimir Putin, the Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko, and other authoritarian politicians. In addition to contemporary politicians, his works also took up historical figures such as the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. His works circulated mainly on social networks and within the opposition-minded Russian diaspora.
