The Irish airline Ryanair is to stop charging parents a fee for a seat next to their children under pressure from European and UK regulators – group CEO Michael O'Leary described the adjustment on Thursday as "widerwillig" (reluctant).

What changes for families?

Until now, Ryanair had charged parents a fee for seat reservations in order to sit next to children under twelve. In Germany, according to industry sources, such a reservation cost between six and ten euros. The airline is keeping the offer to book a paid adult seat and place up to four children next to it free of charge. What is new, however, is that children up to the age of 14 can in future be guaranteed a seat next to their parents at no extra charge – an industry standard that Ryanair is now adopting.
