Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Lega leader Matteo Salvini has rejected taking back refugees from Germany, citing the deployment of German NGO ships in the Mediterranean.
Salvini spoke on the sidelines of an event held by his party in Rome and addressed the German federal government directly. He described the proposal to return rejected asylum seekers from Italy to Germany as unacceptable and accused Berlin of failing to adhere to common European agreements.
He thus linked the question of readmission with a fundamental indictment of the role of German aid organizations in sea rescues.
