Samsung unveils three new foldables: Galaxy Z Fold8, Z Fold8 Ultra and Z Flip8

The most exciting of the three new models is the Galaxy Z Fold8, which launches with a new, wider aspect ratio. When folded, it measures 123.9 × 81.9 × 9.7 mm; unfolded, it measures 123.9 × 161.4 × 4.5 mm. The outer display has a 5.5-inch diagonal in 16:10 format with 1972 × 1248 pixels (428 PPI), and the inner display has 7.6 inches in 4:3 format with 1848 × 2448 pixels (403 PPI). At 201 grams, it is the lightest foldable the manufacturer has produced to date.

Galaxy Z Fold8: New form factor

The more handy foldable is offered in the colors "Graphite", "Cream" and "Lavender"; the fourth colorway "Pistachio" is sold by Samsung only through its online store.

Inside, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy does the work, which is also used in the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The silicon-carbon battery, at 4800 mAh, is sizeable by Samsung standards, but is described as conservatively rated compared with the competition. It charges at up to 45 watts wired and 20 watts wireless, with the manufacturer claiming that around 65 percent charge is reached in 30 minutes.

On the topic of batteries, Samsung explained that the company opted for longevity, which is also reflected in charging. While competitors with silicon-carbon batteries reach up to 80 watts wired, Samsung supports 45 watts and 20 watts wireless. In conversation with the manufacturer, the comment was: "Möglicherweise ist Samsung nach dem Note-7-Drama vor mittlerweile 10 Jahren immer noch vorsichtig."

When it comes to the camera, Samsung cuts back compared with the Ultra model: instead of three sensors, only two are used on the rear, each with 50 megapixels. The wide-angle camera features optical image stabilization and an f/1.8 aperture, accompanied by an ultra-wide-angle camera with 12 MP. Selfie cameras with a 10 MP sensor and f/2.2 aperture are housed in both the inner and outer displays.

One new addition to the photo functions is the "MyFan-Cam" feature, which lets users keep an object or person in focus. For photos in the standard 4:3 ratio, shots can be displayed full-screen on the large folding screen.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: Successor to the Fold7

In terms of flash storage, buyers can choose between 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB; the working memory is uniformly 12 GB of RAM. The Galaxy Z Fold8 is IP48-certified for water resistance, which makes it slightly less well protected against dust compared with some competitors.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra takes over from the Galaxy Z Fold7. As with its predecessor, the outer display measures 6.5 inches (2520 × 1080 pixels, 422 PPI) and the inner display 8 inches (2504 × 2256 pixels, 422 PPI). In a first hands-on, the Fold8 Ultra feels thin and light, though the camera module protrudes noticeably. Unfolded, it is 0.1 mm thinner than its predecessor (now: 4.1 mm).

The biggest differences from the predecessor show up in the battery and the camera. Thanks to the additional space, the Ultra gets a 5000 mAh battery – a full 600 mAh more than the Fold7 – as well as a telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. The main camera uses a more powerful 200 MP sensor, the ultra-wide-angle camera resolves at 50 MP and the telephoto at 10 MP. There is also a 10 MP front camera on both the inside and outside.

Under the hood, as in the Fold8, sits the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy; memory is 12 GB or 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB to 1 TB of flash. It ships with One UI 9.0 based on Android 17, meaning the new foldables already use the current generation of Google's operating system that was released only a few weeks ago.

The inner display of the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra gets a slightly higher resolution than the regular Fold8, though whether this difference is visible is doubtful. For brightness and refresh rate, both fold models offer the same values: up to 3000 nits of peak brightness and a 120 Hz refresh rate, plus anti-reflection coating against glare.

The Galaxy Z Flip8 is the third new model in the lineup and retains the classic clamshell phone format. Samsung describes it as the "slimmest Galaxy Flip model to date". It features a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display (FHD+, 120 Hz), a 4.1-inch HD Super AMOLED cover display (120 Hz) and is IP48-certified.

Galaxy Z Flip8: Evolution in clamshell format

Dimensions are 6.1 mm unfolded and 13.1 mm folded, with a weight of 180 grams. Inside, Samsung's own Exynos 2600 built on a 2 nm process runs at up to 3.8 GHz clock speed, paired with 12 GB of RAM and either 256 GB or 512 GB of storage.

For the camera, the Flip8 uses a dual setup with a 50 MP wide-angle and a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle lens, with a 10 MP front camera on the inside. The battery holds 4300 mAh and charges at 25 W wired and 15 W wireless.

The Flip8 is the only one of the new foldables where Samsung continues to advertise that you can prop it up half-open to take photos. Features such as FlexCam, Flex Mode and Multi-Window are retained. Like the other models, it supports Wi-Fi 7 and USB-C with USB 3.2.

On the software features front, Samsung relies on Galaxy AI with Now Brief and Now Bar, as well as Gemini integrations. The models ship with One UI 9.0 based on Android 17, meaning Samsung's foldables already have the newest generation of Google's operating system on board.

Prices and availability

The prices are record-breaking: the Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at 1999 Euro for the 256 GB variant, the 512 GB version costs 2199 Euro and the 1 TB version 2599 Euro. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra begins at 2200 Euro and costs 2800 Euro with 1 TB of storage. The Galaxy Z Flip8 is available from 1299 Euro (256 GB) and 1499 Euro (512 GB). That puts the Flip8 280 Euro above its predecessor, and the Fold8 Ultra costs another 100 Euro more than the Fold7.

There is nevertheless a Galaxy Z Fold8: it is a smaller foldable with a new form factor roughly reminiscent of Oppo's Find N or Google's Pixel Fold, but at 201 grams significantly lighter and more compact than the competitors' models, which tipped the scales at 270 and 280 grams respectively.

Galaxy Watch9 and Watch Ultra2

Alongside the foldables, Samsung also unveiled the Galaxy Watch9 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra2. The Watch9 is the new everyday standard model and is offered in 40 mm and 44 mm, with an aluminum case and the new Qualcomm chip SDW6100 built on a 3 nm process. The display measures 40 mm and reaches a brightness of 2600 nits. The Watch Ultra2 with a titanium case in 47 mm features a 1.52-inch touch display with 5000 nits of peak brightness and is aimed at outdoor athletes.

Both watches feature the largest battery and brightest screen in the Watch lineup to date and offer expanded health functions such as Sleep Apnea 2.0 for sleep analysis as well as a summarized Heart Health Score. The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is available from 749 Euro.

In the new watches, the models support direct integration of Google Gemini for voice control on the wrist for the first time. The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is IP68-rated against dust and water and is aimed at extreme outdoor activities.
