In the northern Spanish city of Pamplona, the centuries-old San Fermín festival began on Monday at precisely 12:00 p.m. with its controversial bull run, while animal rights activists had protested against the spectacle at the town hall square the day before.

Course of the Bull Run

As every year, the event opened with a small rocket that shot up into the sky over Pamplona at noon, marking the start of the first bull run. Over eight days, the spectacle takes place every morning as thousands of runners drive several fighting bulls through cordoned-off narrow streets of the old town to the bullring. Foreign visitors come mainly from Europe as well as from the USA, Australia, and Asia.
