Dresden, June 03, 2026
The Saxon Higher Administrative Court in Bautzen ruled on Tuesday that the entire Christopher Street Day (CSD) Dresden 2026, including the street festival on the Altmarkt, is to be provisionally treated as a demonstration within the meaning of assembly law.
The 5th Chamber (5th Senate) of the court thus granted the urgent application of the CSD association, overturning the previous decision of the Dresden Administrative Court. The decision is not subject to appeal, but it only takes effect for this year's festival and explicitly applies only to the event from June 4 to 6, 2026.
Previously, the Saxon State Directorate had ruled at the end of March that only the final rally on Saturday was to be classified as a political demonstration. The multi-day, stationary part of the program on the Altmarkt, on the other hand, was assessed as a commercial event with an entertainment character. This classification would have resulted in the organizer having to bear the costs for security and organization of the street festival entirely themselves.
