Candidate in the Harz constituency
Frank-Ronald Bischoff, who is running for the AfD to enter the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt, was a full-time officer of the GDR's State Security, according to information from the Deutsche Presse-Agentur. He is running in the Harz constituency; his list position stands according to party information. The revelation raises questions about the party's reckoning with its own past.
Bischoff himself confirmed upon inquiry that he had been a "pure" Stasi officer. According to his own statements, he worked at the Stasi in Wernigerode and was involved in the surveillance of the GDR population.
Reaction from the AfD
An AfD spokesperson said Bischoff had been placed on a promising list position. The party sees no reason to withdraw him from the candidacy. The AfD is thus sticking with the candidate despite the revelation.
