The Thuringian state commissioner for the Stasi records, Frank Beleites, pointed to the consequences for those affected. Many applicants immediately lost their jobs, were surveilled, were subjected to "Zersetzung" (disintegration) measures, or in the worst cases were even imprisoned. Beleites spoke of shared responsibility for the SED dictatorship.

Beleites called for a clear confrontation with the Stasi past, especially in Saxony-Anhalt, where, experience shows, particularly many networks spanning West and East exist. "We must take an even more careful look today at the reckoning with the SED dictatorship," he said.

The revelation fits a pattern that researchers at the reckoning authorities have been describing for years: Former full-time Stasi employees are visibly represented in parties, administrations, and associations of the post-reunification era. Their uncovering usually depends on the release of files and research such as the current one.

For the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, Bischoff is part of a broader list of AfD candidates. In the federal state, alongside the CDU, SPD, the Left, the Greens, and the BSW, smaller parties are also running. Campaign events in the Harz constituency are upcoming.

Bischoff's case also raises the question of how the electorate will deal with the revelation. Opinion polls have seen the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt at around 30 percent for months; the clarification of the Stasi past could additionally shape the election campaign.

Outlook on the election campaign

The public prosecutors' offices in Saxony-Anhalt are, according to their own statements, investigating in several proceedings on suspicion of activity for a foreign intelligence service or the persecution of political dissenters. Bischoff's specific case is not, at present, the subject of such investigations, which observers are watching with tension.

The Federal Commissioner for the Stasi Records pointed out that the vetting of candidates for public offices remains an ongoing task. There is no legal obligation to disclose the Stasi past of election candidates in Saxony-Anhalt.

Victims' associations in Saxony-Anhalt called for a clear distancing of parties from candidates with a proven Stasi past. The former Citizens' Committee spokesperson expressed dismay at the findings.

Bischoff announced that he would advocate for the Harz region in the upcoming legislative period and would not provide any statement on the allegations. A date for a statement was not given by the AfD press office.
