In the view of political scientist Tim Bale of Queen Mary University of London, Farage's behaviour follows a typical strategy. "Farage is trying to reverse perpetrator and victim: He broke parliamentary rules, but wants to be seen as the victim of an establishment conspiracy," Bale said in an interview with tagesschau.de. Farage himself had declared: "I have decided that the people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions."

At the same time, Farage is feeling the effects of the affair in the polls. "Normally Farage is like Teflon, everything just slides off him," says Bale. "Now we are seeing the first scratches." His lead is narrowing in the polls, and Reform UK has lost three by-elections in a row. The party currently holds only eight of the 650 seats in the British House of Commons, but has been leading in national polls for months.

Shrinking Lead and Lost By-Elections

Farage has responded to growing pressure from the far right with sharper rhetoric. Bale sees this as a new development: "Until now, Farage has always tried to maintain an appearance of seriousness, despite some pretty radical political positions." However, this sharp rhetoric could scare off supporters who have moved from the political centre to the right. Bale warns: "In the eyes of ethno-nationalist supporters, Farage is too soft."

Strategically, things are not going according to plan for Farage. His resignation as party leader, only to stand again shortly afterwards, is a "diversionary tactic in the style of Donald Trump," says Bale. "He is a survivor, he will politically weather the parliamentary investigations. Whether he can achieve major successes in the future, however, is another question." The big prize – moving into 10 Downing Street after the next general election in 2029 – seems a long way off.

Count Binface: An Unusual Challenger

In the by-election in Clacton, expected to take place in early August, Farage's main opponent is coming from an unexpected direction. Instead of running against the much-cited "establishment," he has to campaign against the satirist Count Binface, which translates to "Count Trashcanface." The major parties are not fielding candidates. "Others don't like the fact that some high-ranking Conservative politicians were allowed to switch to Reform UK," it is said.

Behind the figure of Count Binface is 46-year-old Jon Harvey, a married father of two. "Although Count Binface doesn't actually want to be a bin, but rather an 'intergalactic warrior' aged 5,900 years, leader of the 'Recyclons' from the planet Sigma IX." For Harvey, the role is something like therapy. In his 2023 autobiography "A Fan For All Seasons," he writes of personal losses: that of his alcoholic father during his childhood, and that of his brother Dan, whom he found dead in his London flat in 2015 – having died from the effects of undiagnosed diabetes.

Background: Jon Harvey and the Tradition of Satire

Harvey had already taken to the stage in 2017 in the then-constituency of Prime Minister Theresa May, at that time still under the name Lord Buckethead. He did not, however, have permission for the rights to the name. He now campaigns as the independent figure Count Binface – often shortened to "Restore" – who stands for an even stricter migration policy and even more deportations.

Ahead of the by-election in Clacton, Farage must therefore first campaign – against a satirical candidate who is throwing a spanner in the works of the establishment obstacle course. How the voters of Clacton will decide is considered a litmus test for Farage's political resilience.
