Wolfgang Schüssel warned on Monday at the political congress of the European People's Party (EPP) in Vienna that the European Union was "not made for a hostile world" and must reorganize itself against both external and internal challenges.

In his speech before the delegates of the European People's Party in Vienna, Wolfgang Schüssel painted a picture of multiple threats to which the EU was, in his assessment, simultaneously exposed. "We are now being challenged from all sides," he said. Specifically, he named the advance of US tech capitalism, the geopolitical ambitions of China, as well as what he identified as a renaissance of communist ideas.

Diagnosis of a hostile world

As evidence for the latter, the former chancellor pointed, among other things, to the recent election results in New York and Graz. The Christian Democratic family could not ignore this development but had to formulate answers. Schüssel also called on his party friends to be closer to the citizens: "We all live in a bubble," he said, addressing the EPP politicians present directly.
