Austria's Health Minister Korinna Schumann reaffirmed on Saturday that no hospital closures were planned, while at the same time acknowledging that existing sites could develop in the long term into specialist medical centers, primary care centers, or specialized hospitals.

The debate over the future of smaller hospitals in Austria took a new turn over the weekend. In an ORF appearance, Health Minister Korinna Schumann made clear: „Fix sei grundsätzlich, dass nicht an Spitalsschließungen gedacht werde“. At the same time, however, she hinted that not every site would necessarily remain in its current form. „Kein Spital wird geschlossen!“, lautete ihre eiserne Devise. While the sites would not shut down, the minister said verbatim, whether they would remain hospitals was „nicht sicher“.
