Schwarz Group invests billions in new data center near Rostock

With the project, the company explained, it aims to make its own data processing more independent from external providers and create the prerequisites for proprietary AI applications. The region between Rostock and Dummerstorf offers favorable location conditions for this, including fiber optic connections and power grid capacity.

Strategic Goals

Schwarz manager Gerd Chrzanowski, who is responsible for Schwarz Digits, spoke of a strategic milestone. The investment is intended to expand the company's position as one of the largest IT employers in Germany, Chrzanowski said. The project is also of considerable economic significance for the region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

According to the company, the construction of the data center is expected to create several hundred jobs directly at the site, as well as thousands of additional jobs during the construction and supplier phases. Commissioning is planned in several stages, with initial capacities expected to be available in the coming years.

Economic Effects for the Region

The Schwarz Group is among the highest-revenue family-owned companies in Germany and, alongside Lidl and Kaufland, also operates the Schwarz Digits IT division. With its billion-euro investment near Rostock, the group is sending a clear signal in the competition for digital infrastructure, which is being further intensified by the boom in AI applications.

According to the group, the choice of location was also influenced by political support from the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The state government had specifically courted investors in the digital infrastructure sector in recent years and had offered tax relief and accelerated approval procedures.

Observers see the move as part of a broader trend: several major data center projects are currently being built in Germany, driven by the rising demand for computing power for AI models, cloud services, and industrial applications. With this project, the Schwarz Group is positioning itself as one of the largest players in this market.

Competition for Digital Infrastructure

The Dieter Schwarz Foundation, which holds the assets of the founding family, is strategically accompanying the project. With its commitment in the IT sector, the foundation aims, according to its own statements, to strengthen the digital sovereignty of Germany and Europe. Once operational, the data center near Dummerstorf will also be available to public institutions and research partners.

Critics, however, point out that large data centers require significant amounts of electricity and water, raising sustainability questions. The company stated that the site is designed for energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy. In addition, waste heat concepts are intended to make part of the generated heat usable for regional supply.
