Foxborough, 10 July 2026
ARD expert Bastian Schweinsteiger was held up by a massive traffic jam on his way to the football World Cup quarterfinal in Foxborough, USA, and only arrived at the studio completely sweaty just before the broadcast began.
Traffic jam instead of studio
The images of the late-evening ARD broadcast (local time) showed an unusual opening: Instead of taking his seat next to host Esther Sedlaczek on time as usual, the TV expert was initially missing from the screen. Sedlaczek, who was co-hosting the pre-match coverage together with colleague Philipp Sohmer, explained the spontaneous stand-in to the audience: "Du musstest kurzfristig einspringen."
The reason for his absence was a traffic jam around the stadium in Foxborough, a suburb of Boston. Schweinsteiger checked in via video from the car window and described the situation: "Es tut mir leid, ich stecke im Voll-Volll-Voll-Stau. Seit zwei Stunden stecken wir im Verkehr und es zeigt immer noch 50 Minuten an zum Stadion." To illustrate the extent, he deliberately panned the camera out of the window and showed viewers the completely overloaded traffic on the road.
