Vienna, 03 November 2026
Scientific institutions in Vienna and beyond are warning of threats to democracy and academic freedom, while the Irish EU Council presidency proposes 175 billion euros for the next EU financial framework.
The warning is directed at the political public and scientific institutions. The central issue is how open discussion, critical examination and the exchange of differing opinions can be protected.
The Austrian Council for Research warns that democracy and academic freedom should not be treated as matters of course. Science needs discussion and institutional frameworks in order to work reliably.
The central argument is the special role of the scientific system. It cultivates open engagement with different opinions and perspectives, and is capable of learning when new facts change.
Science as a pillar of democracy
These characteristics enable science to test hypotheses through experiments and other verification procedures. On this basis, it can contribute to "democratic resilience" and better decision-making.
