Kleinwalsertal, 01 August 2026
In the Kleinwalsertal, police and mountain rescue have been searching since Thursday for a 73-year-old hiker with dementia who was last seen in the afternoon around 3:00 p.m. and did not return home.
The Kleinwalsertal police inspection and the Oberstdorf police are jointly coordinating the search for the 73-year-old, who suffers from dementia and has been missing since Thursday afternoon. The man was last seen around 3:00 p.m. in the area of the Zweiländerbahn, which connects the Austrian Kleinwalsertal with the German town of Oberstdorf. There has been no trace of him since, as the operation command reported.
Missing Man Last Seen at the Zweiländerbahn
Since the entire hiking area is currently experiencing high-pressure weather with clear visibility and correspondingly many day-trippers on the marked routes, the emergency services assume that the missing person could be located off the signposted trails. In a person suffering from dementia, there is a risk that they will become disoriented and wander into difficult-to-access terrain away from the paths. This assumption shapes the current picture of the search operation.
