58-year-old German hiker lost and exhausted in the Pinzgau

The hiker was given a medical examination after his recovery. According to the mountain rescue, there were initially no indications of more serious injuries or hypothermia. According to his own statements, the 58-year-old was able to leave the operation site the same day.

Health consequences

At the time of his departure, summer-like temperatures prevailed in the Pinzgau, which additionally increased the risk of rapid exhaustion on a tour in alpine terrain. The mountain rescue advises that even on seemingly simple routes, one should always bring sufficient water, provisions, and a complete tour plan.

The Hüttschlag mountain rescue did not provide any further information about the duration of the operation or the exact route of the lost hiker. The rescue teams also did not comment on the man's origin within Germany or on his hiking guide or companions.

The incident was picked up by several regional media, including TV Live-Stream OE24 and Krone Multimedia. The Salzburg mountain rescue considers the operation a typical example of the risks that even experienced mountain hikers take in high mountains when they miss trail markings or misjudge trail junctions.

Mountain rescue advice

After his recovery, the German was pointed out that paths off the marked routes in the area of the Reitalm and Vorderkaseralm easily lead into confusing terrain. Rettenwender emphasized that a short break and sticking to the marked paths is in most cases sufficient to avoid such an operation.

With reference to the incident, the Salzburg mountain rescue recalled its already existing recommendation to realistically assess the weather, the planned route, and one's own fitness before every tour. In case of uncertainty, one should contact Hüttschlag or the responsible local mountain rescue station in good time.

On the following day, the paths around the Reitalm and Vorderkaseralm were normally passable again. According to the mountain rescue, no further operations were required in connection with the incident.
