Search for missing 81-year-old at Schwarzsee near Kitzbühel ends with discovery of a body

The Schwarzsee is a small bathing lake near the Schwarzseeweg and is one of the well-known local recreation areas around Kitzbühel. The lake is easily accessible and has no continuous lifeguard supervision. Due to its alpine location, the water temperature can be low even in summer.

The retired man had left his relatives' house on 1 August to go swimming in the Schwarzsee. During the afternoon and evening, he did not return, prompting relatives to alert the emergency services. A large-scale search operation then got underway, with local residents also assisting.

Investigations and identification

The body was recovered at around 1:13 a.m., according to the police. Formal identification as well as a potential autopsy to determine the cause of death were announced. There were no initial indications of foul play by third parties.

The relatives were cared for by the crisis intervention team of the Red Cross. This initial psychological support is a routine part of operations in Tyrol following fatal swimming accidents.

The responsible Kitzbühel district police have taken over the further investigations. Among other things, they will examine how long the pensioner had been in the water before being found and what circumstances led to the drowning. Results are expected in the coming days.

Safety advice for swimming accidents in Tyrol

The incident is a reminder of the risks of swimming in unsupervised alpine lakes. Even though the exact circumstances remain unclear, emergency organizations advise never swimming alone and realistically assessing one's own strength in the water.

Water rescue and police emphasized that there is no evidence of any criminally relevant behavior by third parties. The case will be processed solely under the aspect of a swimming accident.

The Schwarzsee remains accessible to visitors. An additional cordoning off of the area or a temporary bathing ban is not currently planned, according to the Kitzbühel district administration.

Regional media, including the Austria Presse Agentur (APA), also reported on the incident and paid tribute to the deployment of the rescue workers, who searched for several hours in difficult conditions despite the darkness.

The funeral and memorial service will be held in the immediate family circle, according to the municipality of Kitzbühel. No public memorial events are currently planned.
