Secret weapons cache in the forest: SPIEGEL investigation accuses Russian courier of espionage

The case was referred to the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe, as there is suspicion that the alleged actions were directed against the external security of the Federal Republic of Germany. Investigators are accordingly examining whether an operational network stands behind the depot. SPIEGEL also reports on connections said to extend to Romania and Poland.

According to reports by the "Süddeutsche Zeitung," NDR and WDR, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has indications that the weapons were stored on behalf of Russian intelligence services for agents who were to carry out "operations" in Germany on behalf of Russia, such as assassinations. This makes the dimension of the suspicion clear: it is not only about illegal weapons storage, but possibly also about preparations for attacks.

Intelligence findings on possible assassinations

The research suggests that the hideout was deliberately set up in a difficult-to-access forest area to make discovery harder. According to SPIEGEL information, the courier is said to have brought material to the depot and maintained it over an extended period. In counterintelligence, such structures are considered typical patterns for clandestine logistics.

According to the assessment of German security authorities, Russian intelligence services repeatedly use third countries as hubs for transports and operational meetings. The routes via Romania and Poland mentioned in the research match this pattern. It remains unclear so far how many people were involved in the network.

Connections to Romania and Poland

The Federal Prosecutor's Office has been conducting investigations against the accused since the weekend. These involve, among other things, suspicion of intelligence agent activity as well as possible violations of the War Weapons Control Act. Arrests or searches at further locations were not initially publicly confirmed.

Security experts point out that the Russian military intelligence structure GRU and the civilian foreign intelligence service SWR have repeatedly been linked to sabotage and influence operations in Europe. The current depot thus falls into a growing number of incidents in which Moscow is attributed the destabilization of Western states.

According to SPIEGEL information, the federal government has already been informed. The Interior Ministry said it was taking the matter "very seriously" and was coordinating closely with the intelligence services. A statement from the Russian embassy in Berlin was initially not forthcoming.

Possible consequences for the security situation

Should the suspicion be confirmed, this would be one of the most serious cases of Russian sabotage preparation on German soil since the start of the war of aggression against Ukraine. The geopolitical impact would also be significant, as Berlin is considered an important supporter of Kyiv. The investigations are therefore likely to receive high political as well as legal attention.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office announced that it would inform the public about new findings as soon as this was compatible with the ongoing investigations. Until then, the accused are presumed innocent. SPIEGEL also pointed out that parts of the research were based on months of work together with European partners.
