Belgrade, June 28, 2026
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced at a major rally in Belgrade that he will step down as head of state in a few weeks while also signaling early parliamentary elections later this year.
"I will be president for only a few more weeks, then I will resign," the 56-year-old said on Saturday before tens of thousands of supporters in the center of the Serbian capital. As usual, participants had been bussed in from across the country, with the coaches provided by the ruling SNS party and businessmen dependent on it, as a reporter for the dpa news agency observed.
