The Serbian Parliament on Saturday in Belgrade deliberated on a government motion for self-dissolution and the calling of snap elections, while nationwide protests continue to inflame the political situation.

The session, held in the parliament chamber in Belgrade, is considered the formal start of a process that could culminate in early elections. The government under Aleksandar Vučić had tabled the motion after pressure from the streets and from parts of the opposition had been mounting for weeks. A definitive result of the vote was not initially reported on Saturday.

For months, demonstrations have taken place in Serbian cities, which according to reports from the leading national broadcaster RTS began in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad. The protest movement has since spread to Belgrade and other regions, according to media reports. Among other things, demonstrators are calling for political change and greater transparency.
