Serbian Railways (Srbija Voz) halted all passenger and freight train services across the country early Saturday, leaving travelers stranded with no explanation just hours before a major anti-government protest was set to take place in Belgrade.
The surprise announcement appeared on the Srbija Voz website at 4:15 a.m. Saturday, stating that trains would not run “bis auf weiteres” (until further notice). “Wir danken den Passagieren für ihr Verständnis,” the statement added, thanking passengers for their understanding. No reason was given for the unprecedented nationwide stoppage.
A reporter from the German news agency dpa received confirmation of the total train halt at a ticket counter in Subotica on Saturday morning, and the counter clerk could not provide any explanation for the measure.
