The 44-year-old American Serena Williams withdrew from her scheduled first-round women's doubles appearance at the Wimbledon grass-court classic alongside her sister Venus Williams due to a knee injury.

Williams said she had sustained the injury during her first singles match in nearly four years, which she lost in three sets to Australia's Maya Joint at Wimbledon. Afterwards, the former world number one complained of pain and swelling in her knee, making it impossible to compete in the doubles.

In an emotional Instagram post, Williams stated: "Es bricht mir das Herz, mich aus dem Doppel zurückziehen zu müssen." She added that she had done everything she could, but her knee was not yet ready for competition. The return to the tennis court had been a gift, and the chance to play once more alongside her sister Venus had meant everything to her.
