Serena Williams lost in the first round of her highly anticipated singles comeback at Wimbledon, exiting after 2:22 hours against 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6.

Comeback after four years

The 44-year-old American, who had played her last singles match at Wimbledon four years ago, entered the tournament with a wildcard and walked onto Centre Court to great applause. Her sister Venus Williams filmed the moment on her phone. She was accompanied in the players' box by her husband Alexis Ohanian and their two daughters, Alexis Olympia and Adira.

Williams trailed 3-6 after the first set but fought back in the tiebreak of the second set, saving a match point before winning the set 8-6 in the tiebreak. In the decisive third set, however, the significantly younger Maya Joint, ranked 87th in the world, had the better legs and secured victory after 2 hours and 22 minutes of play.
