Situation in Rathen and the Bastei Region

Affected areas included the municipality of Rathen, where according to initial reports several paths and tourist access points were impacted. The rock castle Neurathen is, according to local emergency services, only accessible to a limited extent for the time being. Hiking trails along the Elbe were also partially under water, blocking popular routes around the Lilienstein and into the Bastei region.

In Upper Lusatia, the damage concentrated, according to MDR reports, mainly on the town of Bad Muskau and the Fürst-Pückler-Park located there. Employees of the park administration had to clear paths and cordon off damaged wooden bridges. The famous castle complex remained largely spared according to initial findings, although individual outbuildings and path surfaces were undermined.

The Dresden Fire Department registered, according to its own information, a significantly increased number of operations in the city area, including flooded underground garages and fallen trees. In the surroundings of the state capital as well, landslides occurred on several smaller roads. No injuries were reported as of yet.

Impact on Tourism and Infrastructure

Across Saxony, several rural districts were in continuous operation according to information from the Interior Ministry. Civil protection warned of further showers during the night and called on residents along smaller streams to seal basements and light wells. Rail traffic on the Dresden–Bad Schandau route was also temporarily interrupted because tracks were covered with rubble and mud.

Langhans explained that the weather situation was typical for midsummer thunderstorm conditions, in which individual cells barely move from the spot for hours. The resulting rainfall amounts are then locally extreme, while neighboring localities remain comparatively dry. A complete all-clear was not yet possible, as further thunderstorms were forecast.

Damage Assessment and Consequences for Insurers

For the Saxon Switzerland tourism region, the incident is economically tricky, as the summer holidays in Saxony are currently underway. Many hikers, climbers, and day visitors from Germany and abroad had to reschedule their tours at short notice. Regional accommodation establishments reported cancellations because excursion destinations such as the Bastei or the rock castle were not accessible as usual.

Insurers expect, according to initial estimates, damages in the low six-figure range, although an exact assessment is still pending. Household contents and residential building insurance are primarily affected, industrial facilities less so. The German Insurance Association announced it would strengthen its claims teams in the region.

On social media, residents documented the masses of water with videos that were viewed tens of thousands of times within hours. They repeatedly showed brown floods shooting through narrow alleys and tearing garden walls along. Helpers from neighboring towns brought sandbags and pumps to the most severely affected districts to support stranded residents.

Weather Analysis and Further Outlook

The Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge region and the district of Görlitz asked the population to continue paying attention to warning apps and local announcements. Emergency numbers for acute flooding damage were also set up. The authorities announced that an initial official damage assessment would be presented during the course of Thursday.

Meteorologists see, according to MDR, climate change as a contributing cause for the increase in such local extreme precipitation events. Warmer air can store more moisture and release it within the shortest time during thunderstorms. Comparable events have occurred in Saxony several times in recent years, most recently in June 2026 in the Erzgebirge.
