The district pointed out that closed areas must not be entered without authorization as long as no clearance has been issued. The closure will remain in effect until cleanup operations are completed and the paths are safe to walk again.

Exempted from the closure are emergency and rescue services, employees of forestry, conservation, and security authorities, forest owners and specialized companies carrying out safety work, as well as other persons authorized by the authorities, including employees of the Felsenbühne Rathen.

Exceptions for Emergency Services and Felsenbühne

The Vordere Sächsische Schweiz nature park region is one of Saxony's most visited hiking areas and is particularly popular with day visitors and families during the summer months. With the closures, the district aims to prevent visitors from traveling on unsecured paths where storm damage continues to be cleared.

The authority announced that it would inspect the condition of the paths in the coming days and gradually provide information on the lifting of individual closures. Current warning signs at access points and the district's communication channels will allow residents to stay informed about reopened routes on an ongoing basis.

Popular Hiking Region Under Safety Precaution

The incident illustrates the consequences of severe summer storms in the region's forests, which are particularly susceptible to windthrow due to their rock formations and dense tree cover. In recent years, comparable storms have repeatedly led to multi-day closures in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

Forestry authorities and aid organizations stated they were deployed immediately after the storm to assess the damage and carry out initial safety measures. Specialized companies have since been removing fallen trees and unstable crowns along the affected routes.

The municipality of Rathen, which lies directly in the core area of the closures, is heavily frequented by tourists and is home to the Felsenbühne Rathen, a well-known open-air theater venue. The fact that its employees are expressly exempted from the closure shows that ongoing rehearsals and performances depend on secured paths.

Hiking enthusiasts and residents should, according to the district, take closure signs seriously and use designated detours or alternative routes outside the closed areas. Anyone deviating onto closed paths endangers themselves and simultaneously hinders the ongoing safety work of the emergency services.

The region around the Raaberkessel and the Polenz Valley is considered particularly scenic because narrow gorges, rock formations, and near-natural beech forests alternate here. Precisely this diversity makes the paths unpredictable after storms, as crown breakage and landslides can remain undetected for extended periods.
