Rail traffic was also significantly impaired by the storms. On the Bologna-Venice line, delays occurred, and on the Ferrara-Ravenna connection, individual trains were canceled. Travelers had to expect waiting times of several hours in some cases, as rail representatives confirmed.

Agriculture is one of the hardest-hit sectors. According to farmers' associations, fruit orchards, vegetable fields, and arable land were destroyed. The farmers' association Coldiretti estimated the damage at several hundred million euros. This means the harvest of many crops is significantly endangered this year, the association said.

Weather Front Moves South

After the storms, the weather front moved further toward central and southern Italy. In Apulia, rail traffic in the Foggia area was temporarily suspended, among other impacts. In the south of the country, temperatures of more than 40 degrees persisted, while numerous forest and land fires were reported. The combination of extreme heat and dry vegetation significantly increased the risk of fire.

Authorities called on residents in several municipalities to exercise increased caution. Weather services warned of further thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail in the coming days. Storm warnings were also in effect for parts of northern Italy for the night into Wednesday.

Agriculture Facing Millions in Losses

Insurance companies expected a significantly rising number of damage claims. Vehicles, residential buildings, and agricultural operations were particularly affected. The exact total damage can only be determined after a complete assessment, representatives of the insurance industry explained.

The storms are part of a series of extreme weather events hitting Italy this summer. Weather experts see a connection with the ongoing climate change, which is making such heatwaves and heavy precipitation more frequent in the region. The Italian government announced that it would coordinate aid measures for the affected regions.
