A tornado and a violent hailstorm devastated the Italian Adriatic coast between Venice and Ancona on Tuesday, causing damages estimated to run into the millions according to initial assessments.

A tornado developed near Sottomarina on the Venetian coast on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. As eyewitness accounts and initial reports show, the whirlwind tore off roofs, snapped trees, and damaged beach facilities in several coastal towns. "Tatsächlich entwickelte sich ein Tornado bei Sottomarina an der venezianischen Küste und hinterließ eine Spur der Verwüstung," the reports state.

The tornado was accompanied by so-called supercells with destructive storm gusts, hurricane-force winds, and exceptionally large hail. "Hagelkörner mit einem Durchmesser von bis zu 15 Zentimetern, die Autos, Dächer und Solaranlagen massiv beschädigten," the meteorologists describe the situation. "Dazu kamen orkanartige Windböen."
