A dangerous severe weather pattern is set to sweep across Hesse and Bavaria starting Friday afternoon, bringing thunderstorms, large hail, heavy rain and strong winds through Sunday.

The German Weather Service (DWD) and hr-meteorologist Stefan Laps have issued warnings for the weekend, with the first storms expected to develop in northern and western Hesse and along the Main river on Friday afternoon. These thunderstorms are forecast to weaken only during the night.

Temperatures on Saturday could climb as high as 32 degrees Celsius in Hesse, creating conditions ripe for severe weather. Throughout the weekend, heavy rain, hail, strong winds and thunderstorms are expected intermittently across the state.

Stefan Laps cautioned that the situation could become intense in some locations. "Es kann stellenweise heftig zur Sache gehen," he said, while noting that not every area will be hit. "Es wird nicht jeden treffen."

Hesse Braces for Large Hail and Flooding

Hailstones could reach two to four centimeters in diameter and strike the ground at speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour. The risk of thunderstorms and showers is significantly higher in southern Hesse on Saturday, with the north of the state expected to be largely spared during the day. "Der Norden ist am Samstag außen vor im Laufe des Tages," Laps stated.
