On Corpus Christi, severe thunderstorms with hurricane-force gusts, heavy rain, and a tornado confirmed by the German Weather Service swept across parts of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Severe Gusts and a Tornado

As early as the afternoon, warnings were issued for the Ruhr area and Lower Rhine for severe thunderstorms. According to the available weather data, individual storm cells brought up to 21 liters of rain per square meter locally. At the weather station in Höxter, a hurricane-force gust of 117 kilometers per hour was measured, while in Neuss, Hemer, Geilenkirchen, and Büren-Ahden, stormy gusts between 65 and 74 kilometers per hour were recorded.

Jörg Brunsmann from the WDR weather editorial team explained the complex weather situation: "It's like putting a pot of water on the stove; you can't predict where the first bubble will rise." A special weather situation thus caused different wind directions and speeds at various altitudes, allowing the storm cells to rotate and remain active longer.
