A powerful thunderstorm front struck western Germany on Thursday evening, triggering a wave of emergency responses, disrupting road and rail traffic, and prompting official weather warnings for several regions.
Official Warnings and Forecast
The German Weather Service (DWD) issued an official severe weather warning—level 3 on its 4-tier scale—for areas in southwestern Lower Saxony and northern North Rhine-Westphalia early in the evening. Meteorologist Tim Steger described the volatile conditions, stating, "Prinzipiell kann es lokal ziemlich zur Sache gehen."
The DWD forecast heavy rainfall of up to 25 liters per square meter, along with hail and squalls reaching 85 kilometers per hour. Locally, even more severe gusts of up to 110 kilometers per hour were expected. The agency also warned that rainfall could be heavier in some places, reaching 30 liters per square meter.
