Three days after the sinking of a passenger ship off the Indonesian island of Selayar, five survivors were spotted by fishermen and recovered by rescue services.

The ship had sunk on Wednesday south of Sulawesi after suffering an engine failure. Fishermen spotted the five survivors at the weekend on the open sea and then alerted the rescue services.

According to local rescue chief Muhammad Arif Anwar, speaking to the news agency AFP, the survivors – including a seven-year-old girl – had spent almost three days at sea without significant food or water. They were exhausted and weakened, but had managed to sustain themselves somewhat with a few packs of instant noodles and biscuits.
