Powerful earthquake off Indonesia's coast kills at least 20 people

Rescue operations underway

Indonesia's national disaster agency began coordinating search and rescue operations shortly after the tremor. Emergency services were dispatched to affected villages, where teams worked to clear debris and reach residents trapped under damaged structures. Medical teams were also mobilized to treat the injured.

The earthquake is the latest in a series of seismic events to strike Indonesia in recent years. The archipelago of more than 17,000 islands lies at the junction of several tectonic plates, including the Pacific Plate and the Indo-Australian Plate. In 2004, a massive undersea earthquake off Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed more than 220,000 people across the region.

Indonesia's seismic vulnerability

Rescue efforts were complicated by reports of damaged infrastructure, including roads and bridges connecting coastal towns. Authorities warned residents to remain alert for aftershocks, which can follow major earthquakes and pose additional risks to weakened structures.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) did not issue a tsunami warning immediately following the earthquake, but officials cautioned that sea levels could fluctuate in coastal areas. Fishermen were advised to return to shore pending further assessments.

International aid mobilised

International response organizations, including the Indonesian Red Cross, deployed volunteers to assist with evacuations and the distribution of emergency supplies such as food, water, and blankets. Temporary shelters were set up for residents whose homes had been damaged or destroyed.

The US Geological Survey said it would continue to monitor aftershock activity and provide updated data on the earthquake's magnitude and depth. Seismologists noted that the region's tectonic complexity makes accurate early warnings challenging, though advances in detection technology have improved response times in recent years.

Indonesian addressed the nation in a televised statement, expressing condolences to the families of the victims and pledging government support for reconstruction efforts. He said ministries would coordinate to provide immediate relief and longer-term assistance to affected communities.

Government pledges reconstruction support

The full extent of the damage was still being assessed on the day of the quake. Officials said casualty figures could rise as rescue teams reached more remote areas on Flores and neighboring islands. The disaster once again highlighted the vulnerability of island nations in the Pacific region to seismic events.
