Health Authorities Give the Green Light

Oceanwide Expeditions, the owner of the vessel, had already announced that the 'Hondius' would depart from the port of Rotterdam once inspections were completed, with the intention of resuming cruises starting June 13. The last remaining crew members after the passengers disembarked came off the ship in Rotterdam.

The outbreak occurred during an Atlantic crossing that had taken the ship from the waters of extreme southern Argentina to the Cape Verde archipelago, a remote itinerary that complicated the management of the health emergency. Among the victims was also a German citizen.

The Virus and Transmission Methods

Hantaviruses are viruses transmitted primarily through the urine, feces, and saliva of infected rodents and can cause severe respiratory illnesses in humans. There is currently no vaccine available to prevent infection, making environmental control measures and rapid outbreak identification crucial.

The incident has raised questions about health procedures aboard cruise ships operating in remote areas, where access to advanced medical facilities is limited. Oceanwide Expeditions, specializing in polar exploration and off-the-beaten-path destinations, has not released further details on the condition of the surviving passengers.

Dutch authorities followed rigorous protocols before granting clearance for the restart, verifying that every area of the ship had been treated according to international standards for pathogen decontamination. The 'Hondius' can now leave the port and resume its operations.

Resumption of Cruises

The news of the disinfection and subsequent authorization comes just weeks after the ship's arrival in Europe, marking the end of a period of isolation and checks that kept the vessel docked in the Dutch port.
