Rotterdam, May 31, 2026

The cruise ship 'Hondius' has been declared safe and authorized to sail from the port of Rotterdam after undergoing cleaning and disinfection following a deadly Hantavirus outbreak that caused the deaths of three passengers.

The announcement was made on Saturday by the Rotterdam health authority, which confirmed the completion of sanitization operations aboard the ship belonging to the company Oceanwide Expeditions. The 'Hondius' had arrived in the Dutch port on May 18, after a journey that took it from the southern tip of Argentina to the Cape Verde islands.

According to the authorities, the ship was "effektiv gesäubert und die Desinfektion im Einklang mit den vorgeschriebenen Richtlinien ausgeführt," meaning effectively cleaned and disinfected in accordance with prescribed guidelines. The operation became necessary after three passengers had lost their lives due to the virus.
