Mistelbach, 16 June 2026

An electrical short circuit set a sawmill in Mistelbach in Lower Austria ablaze on the night of last Thursday, causing damage in the mid six-figure range.

The fire broke out in the night leading into last Thursday in a wood chip storage facility and spread rapidly across the site. The flames quickly spread throughout the facility, reducing parts of the sawmill to rubble and ashes.

Operation at the highest alert level

Due to the massive smoke development and the speed of the fire's spread, the highest alert level "B4" was triggered. Around 200 firefighters battled the flames for hours. It was only shortly before 10:30 a.m. that the fire department was able to declare the fire "out."

According to initial estimates, damage in the mid six-figure range was incurred, police spokesperson Stefan Loidl said on Tuesday in response to an APA inquiry. According to police, the final amount of property damage has not yet been determined.
