VIENNA, 30 June 2026

Employed persons in Austria spent an average of 14.7 calendar days on sick leave in 2025, corresponding to a decline of 2.7 percent compared to the previous year.

The sick leave rate — that is, sick leave days in relation to total working volume — stood at 4 percent, roughly on par with the previous year. The share of insured persons who were on sick leave at least once in 2025 also fell by one percentage point compared to the reference year 2024.

On average, a sick leave episode lasted 9.1 days, with significant differences in frequency and duration. Just 1.1 percent of long-term sick leaves account for 27.9 percent of total sick leave days. By contrast, short-term sick leaves lasting less than four days already accounted for 44.7 percent of all cases, representing a new all-time high; however, measured as a share of total sick leave days, their proportion was only around 10 percent.
