Sick leave among dependent employees in Austria declined slightly last year, but at an average of 14.7 calendar days per employee remains above the pre-coronavirus pandemic level, according to a report presented on Tuesday.

Specifically, sick leave fell by 2.7 percent year-on-year to an average of 14.7 calendar days. In 2024, the figure was still 15.1 days. The slight decline should not obscure the fact that the figures remain above pre-pandemic levels, the study's authors stressed.

The direct costs of illness-related absences amounted to 1.3 percent of gross domestic product according to the latest available data from 2024. They are made up of continued wage payments by companies (4.8 billion euros), sick pay from health insurance (1.2 billion euros), as well as lost value added, which under simplified assumptions can reach up to 8.8 billion euros, according to the documents accompanying the report.
