The energy technology group Siemens Energy plans to rename itself Omterra over the next eighteen months, thereby ceasing further use of the protected name of its Siemens parent.

Siemens Energy had already indicated some time ago that it would not extend the licensing agreement with the venerable Munich-based parent group, which runs until 2030. CEO Christian Bruch now said the company was well positioned, having "das Vertrauen unserer Kunden und des Kapitalmarkts gewonnen, unsere Profitabilität verbessert und ehrgeizige Wachstumspläne für die kommenden Jahre". Now was the right time to initiate the transition to an independent brand.

Background: Licensing Agreement with Siemens

At the time of Siemens Energy's spin-off, it was agreed that the new company could continue using the protected name Siemens for ten years. In return, however, the group must pay a licensing fee tied to its revenue. In the past year alone, that amounted to roughly 300 million euros. Exiting the brand agreement is therefore also a financial decision.
