Signal box failure near Ottersberg: Train service between Bremen and Hamburg disrupted until Saturday midday

According to NDR Braunschweig, the route via Rotenburg was among those affected. The section in the Verden area and in the Verden district was also included in the disruptions. Commuters and travelers heading to Bremen Hauptbahnhof or in the direction of Hamburg had to expect delays, partial cancellations and replacement services.

Deutsche Bahn, which also operates trains on many sections of the north-south connection between Bremen and Hamburg, was involved in coordination according to its own statements. Passengers were asked to check current connections before starting their journey and to switch to alternative modes of transport if necessary.

The S-Bahn, which operates on its own routes in the greater Bremen and Hamburg area, was not directly affected by the signal box failure near Ottersberg according to current findings. However, regional and long-distance services on the classic route via Rotenburg and Verden suffered under the restrictions.

The cause of the disruption is a technical defect at the signal box in Ottersberg, a municipality in the Verden district. A signal box is the central technical facility from which switches and signals of a station or section of track are controlled. When a signal box fails, trains in the affected section often have to operate manually or at greatly reduced speed, which can throw the entire timetable into disarray.

Technical personnel were working around the clock to repair the damage according to Metronom. Exactly how the failure occurred was not yet conclusively known. NDR Braunschweig reported on the incident and referred to statements from the rail operator.

Travelers between Bremen and Hamburg had to expect a tense situation on Friday afternoon and in the hours that followed. According to Metronom's assessment, the disruptions stretched into Saturday. A gradual normalization of train service was only expected once the repair work at the Ottersberg signal box was completed.
