Because of smoking brakes on a train, Deutsche Bahn blocked a rail line near Magdeburg on Thursday, severely disrupting traffic toward Berlin and services to Hanover.

Estimates suggest that around 1,000 travelers were waiting for onward journeys at Magdeburg Central Station alone. Passengers on other affected trains were also affected. For many travelers, the disruption meant longer waiting times or having to plan a transfer on an already heavily congested route.

The disruption affects the Berlin–Magdeburg–Hanover route. This means that intercity connections between the capital, Saxony-Anhalt, and Lower Saxony are affected. According to MDR SACHSEN-ANHALT, the section around Burg in Jerichower Land was blocked because of smoke from a braking system.
