The Sinabung volcano on the Indonesian island of Sumatra hurled an approximately 3,500-meter-high ash cloud into the sky above the Karo Plateau on Monday, prompting authorities to issue the second-highest alert level.
What is known so far about the eruption
The eruption occurred in the morning on the Karo Plateau in the province of North Sumatra. According to the Indonesian volcanological agency PVMBG, the ash column rose around 3,500 meters above the crater of Mount Sinabung. The cloud drifted toward the east and southeast, officials said.
Authorities raised the volcano's activity to the second-highest alert level. In surrounding villages, people were called on to seek shelter and stay away from river channels where hot lava flows could pass through. "Auch in den folgenden Jahren mussten Anwohner wegen Ausbrüchen und Aschewolken wiederholt ihre Häuser verlassen", a report stated.
