Palu, June 16, 2026
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook Sulawesi near the city of Palu on June 16, 2026, at a depth of approximately ten kilometers.
Location and Magnitude of the Quake
The earthquake occurred on June 16, 2026, according to the news program Deutschlandfunk, and struck the region near the city of Palu, which is located on the island situated between Borneo and Papua New Guinea. Sulawesi, with around 20 million inhabitants, is one of the larger islands of the Indonesian archipelago, which consists of more than 17,000 islands and is home to around 280 million people – the majority of whom live on the main island of Java.
The US earthquake observatory USGS recorded several aftershocks with magnitudes of up to 5.2 following the main quake. The shallow focal depth of around ten kilometers generally amplifies the impact at the Earth's surface, which is why damage in the affected region is to be expected even with moderate magnitudes.
