Fire at the Oxy building: six dead in an elevator

In central Brussels, a fire in an extensively converted building has killed at least six people. A spokesperson for Mayor Philippe Close stated in the early evening after the blaze was extinguished: „Wir haben sechs leblose Körper gefunden." The public prosecutor's office said that initially five victims had been discovered, and a sixth person was subsequently located as well.

The building in question is the so-called Oxy building, located in a pedestrian zone in the center of the Belgian capital. It is currently undergoing extensive renovation and, according to earlier statements, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. It formerly served as the seat of the administration of the Belgian capital; it is now to be transformed into a multifunctional building with offices, restaurants, hotel rooms, and apartments. The project is backed by the firms Whitewood and Immobel.
