Witten, 28 May 2026

Six rhesus monkeys escaped from their enclosure in Witten on Thursday, with one successfully recaptured later that day, according to local police.

The animals were part of a group of 20 rhesus macaques that had been relocated to Witten for animal welfare reasons. The circumstances of the breakout remain under investigation, but initial reports indicate the monkeys breached a brick wall of their enclosure.

A police spokesperson confirmed the first success in the recovery effort on Thursday. "One of the six escapees has been recaptured," the spokesperson said, without providing details on where or how the animal was caught.

Public Advisory

Authorities are continuing to search for the remaining five monkeys. The police have asked residents to remain calm and avoid approaching the animals if spotted.
